Architecting Data Subject Management in NestJS

The Goal

In our project, project-sass-lopdp, we are focusing on implementing a robust framework for managing data subjects. As we scale, it is crucial to ensure that our entity handling is decoupled, scalable, and adheres to modern architectural patterns within our NestJS ecosystem.

The Approach

We began by scaffolding a dedicated module to handle data subject operations. In a NestJS application, this is like building a specialized desk in a large office; instead of everyone trying to share a single, cluttered space, we create a specific area (a module) where all the necessary tools and logic for data subjects live.

Modularizing the Domain

By creating a standalone module, we encapsulate the business logic, controllers, and services related to data subjects. This isolation makes testing easier and prevents our main application code from becoming an unmanageable monolith.

@Module({
  imports: [TypeOrmModule.forFeature([DataSubject])],
  controllers: [DataSubjectController],
  providers: [DataSubjectService],
  exports: [DataSubjectService],
})
export class DataSubjectModule {}

This structure ensures that our data handling logic is cleanly separated from other application concerns, such as authentication (JWT) or utility transformations (Lodash).

Implementing the Service Layer

We focus on keeping the controller thin by delegating heavy lifting to the service layer. This is a common pattern where the controller acts as the front desk, only directing requests to the proper worker (the service) who actually processes the data.

@Injectable()
export class DataSubjectService {
  constructor(
    @InjectRepository(DataSubject)
    private readonly repository: Repository<DataSubject>,
  ) {}

  async create(dto: CreateDataSubjectDto): Promise<DataSubject> {
    return this.repository.save(dto);
  }
}

Key Takeaways

  • Encapsulation: Always isolate domain-specific logic into its own module to keep the codebase clean.
  • Thin Controllers: Offload complex operations to services to ensure your endpoints remain readable and maintainable.
  • Scalability: By following the NestJS module architecture, you make it significantly easier to extend features without risking side effects in unrelated areas of your application.
